Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Jason Leigh Turn Up at Rodarte Show

Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kirsten Dunst and Tessa Thompson were front and center at Rodarte's fall 2016 show on a rainy Tuesday in New York, which comes as no surprise since the actresses are big fans (Dunst even helped sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy when they started the line in Los Angeles in 2005 by wearing it almost exclusively).

The Fargo star donned one of the fall looks: a black lace and illusion ruffled cocktail dress that looked like it was made for her — and probably was. Oscar nominee Leigh has worn Rodarte (along with Roland Mouret) for many of her pre-Oscars red-carpet looks, and her stylist Maryam Malakpour waited for her front row, pacing, as Leigh ran a bit late. In fact, the lights had gone down, with help from the red and pink neon art installation in the middle of the round runway, when Leigh dashed in at the start of the show. Of course the photographers followed her and nearly crashed into some early models. This being Rodarte, the celebrity reaction was much more chill and subtle than a Michael Kors or Calvin Klein show.

Both Leigh and Dunst will find plenty of Oscar week options here — and will be conveniently in the same town as the designers should they choose to do fittings. The dresses and gowns were almost all red-carpet-worthy (and swoon-worthy too) mostly in black or a dark wine red, combining panels of lace, Swarovski crystals, tulle and ruffles — often layered up under big fluffy chubby multi-color furs or chic shrunken embellished leather jackets.

The deep brown lipstick and white creamy faces of the models brought back the '90s heyday of L.A. Goth — the whole collection had esthetic touches of recent Givenchy (lace, sheerness, lingerie), McQueen (ruffles, architecture, leather) and Rick Owens. The white group was ripe for a Goth wedding and sequins were smattered everywhere. The models wore tiny flowers in their hair and Rodarte shoes — now where do you suppose they sell them? Somehow, some way, ladies will want to get their hands on their Victorian-punk wrap-up-the-leg boots, which were done in fabric and leather so they ruffled like the clothes.

If anyone dares to dress their client maximal at the Oscars it could be Malakpour, who also dresses The Rolling Stones and Heidi Klum. So let's hold our collective breath and hope Leigh truly goes for texture and ultra richness at the Academy Awards. She might be alone in her dark romantic lace froth, since it's all sequin columns these days, but she'll be hometown fabulous and romantically avant garde.

"It's worked out very well for us to work with the Mulleavys and Roland [Mouret] exclusively for Jennifer," noted Malakpour. "Jennifer's comfortable and I'm friends with the Rodarte girls and Roland, so it all worked out in a very intimate way. And it's nice to honor your longtime relationships."
