Wonder Woman's Powerful Influence on Fashion

Comic-Con may have just wrapped up in San Diego, but there's one comic book character in particular whose influence goes far beyond the convention.

Wonder Woman, who first appeared in American comic books in 1941, is a demigod, a Justice League founding member, a warrior princess of the Amazons, and a fashion and beauty icon to boot. With her envy-inducing locks (serious #hairgoals), patriotic bustier, and knee-high boots, she's inspired countless designers and celebrity red-carpet looks in the most unexpected ways. Her style is alluring because it pops: a cherry-red bustier with gold details, blue hot pants with white stars, matching gold cuffs, and a cape are the stuff of fashion dreams.

The newly released trailer for the 2017 Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot, which debuted at Comic-Con, confirms the character as a winning style icon.

Here are five ways Wonder Woman has had an influence on fashion.

Givenchy Haute Couture spring 1997

Alek Wek walked the runway of Givenchy's spring 1997 haute couture show in a sculpted, formfitting golden dress. The silhouette of the bustier on the dress was extremely similar to the silhouette of Wonder Woman's golden-detailed costume. Plus, the material looked as if it were made of metal, giving the illusion of chic armor, just like what a superheroine would wear.

Jeremy Scott fall 2011

Jeremy Scott's fall 2011 collection featured a hodgepodge of different references, ranging from the Coca-Cola and Superman logos to Clueless. His Wonder Woman tribute was subtle—a model wore a white dress with cutouts and blue stars that resemble the pattern on Wonder Woman's hot pants.

Dolce & Gabbana spring 2015

For Dolce and Gabbana's spring 2015 collection, a model wore a black dress topped with a embellished, sculpted gold bustier. The details of the red rosettes and flowered headpiece mirrored the color scheme and style of Wonder Woman's uniform. This would be Wonder Woman had she been a modernized Italian princess.

Valentino's Wonder Woman collection

In April, Valentino released a Wonder Woman–themed capsule collection inspired by the prints, motifs, colors, and silhouettes of Wonder Woman's iconic uniform. Star-shaped studs replaced the normal studs on the popular Rockstud shoes, while jeans, gowns, and tees were printed with tiny white stars.

Alicia Vikander at the Met Gala

Actress Alicia Vikander wore a Louis Vuitton dress that closely resembled Wonder Woman's outfit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala in 2016. The gold sequined gown was topped with cherry-red bustier and black fabric ruffle placed on the side that definitely looked like it could have been a cape. The red-and-black utilitarian-style ankle boots were an interesting addition. Consider this the Wonder Woman uniform of the year.
