Eating black pepper in pregnancy is often associated with a note of caution rather than a benefit. For sure, it shouldn't be taken in large doses as it can be irratating not just for the mother but the baby as well. However, it has to be said that there are numerous benefits associated with black pepper (piperine) as well so should it be avoided during pregnancy?

Benefits

As mentioned, eating this potent spice doesn't neccessarily have to be treated with caution. Having been pregnant myself, I've enjoyed eating spicy food still and yet no harm has come to my baby. It has been found that piperine can be useful in fighting the common cold to help fight those dreaded baby blues.

It has also been shown to actually help digestion (if taken in moderation) by increasing the level of hydrochloric acid a.k.a.stomach acid. This can potentially be good news if you suffer from acid reflux or GERD during pregnancy.

Side Effects

Whilst we should know the benefits of eating black pepper in pregnancy, it should not be consumed in vast quantities. As I previously mentioned, it can aid digestion but if taken in vast quantities, it can actually ignite more digestion problems. It can also induce early labour if taken in an oil form as well.

To conclude, black pepper in pregnancy isn't harmful for the baby if taken in moderation. Anything more than that should be taken in caution.
