You probably recognize Harley Viera Newton as any number of things: DJ! Street Style Star! Social Media Whiz! BFF of fellow It Girls Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevingne! Well, here’s one more hyphenate to add to her resume: designer! The twentysomething’s debut collection of day-to-night dresses—called HVN—hitsMatchesFashion.com Wednesday, and has Harley’s signature all over it. Think forties-inspired frocks with charming, whimsical prints in flattering fit-and-flare silhouettes. (Did we mention that Margot Robbie has already taken the cherry print one for a spin?)

But no need to google-image Margot or Harley for style inspo: “I’d love these prom dresses london to become a staple in your closet that you make your own,” says Harley. Oh, and as for the naysayers who think it’s impossible to do more than one thing well, Harley’s got something to say to you: “I’ve always struggled with people being judgmental or confused by a woman who does several things,” she explains. “Men have been doing that forever and no one thinks twice about it. I feel like women are really breaking that mold, becoming their own bosses, and doing it all. And that’s incredible. There’s no reason not to.” Preach.

I sat down with the multihyphenate (and, full disclosure, my friend) for the 411 on her dresses and her inspiring outlook on style and business. Read on!

Glamour: We’ve been talking about this collection for a long time, and now it’s finally here.

Harley Viera Newton: I’ve been working on it for two years. It’s crazy exciting that I can wear it now. I had to keep it under wraps for so long.

Glamour: When did your obsession with dresses begin and what is it about them that you love?

HVN: My mom has been my inspiration forever. Her closet looks like mine. Growing up, I would see her beautiful collection of dresses, and how easy it was for her to get dressed. She always looked put together and chic, but it felt so easy. Getting dressed was never a huge deal for her. She would just throw on a dress and earrings. So I obviously started borrowing her dresses as soon as I could—some of them were stolen forever. For my 6th grade graduation, I’m literally wearing a vintage Audrey Hepburn–style dress with a low, pink sandal.

Glamour: Style game on point in sixth grade. That’s impressive. So, you’ve collected vintage dresses for years?

HVN: Basically, a dress is my uniform. And most of my closet has been made up of vintage dresses. But every time I would find these amazing dresses, I would have to put so much work into making them fit and work for me. Either the fabric was in terrible condition or it felt awful on the skin, or the cut was off. I ended up with incredibly unique pieces, but I was investing a lot of time and money into tailoring every single one.

Glamour: So when did the lightbulb moment happen when you realized you could turn this into a business?

HVN: You know when you’re looking for something, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I wish I could find this but with that sleeve or that print?’ These dresses are my answer to that. I’m essentially just taking these classic silhouettes that look good on women of all ages and body types, and updating them in special prints and luxurious silks that feel great on the body.

Glamour: I love the use of color and print.

HVN: That was something that was important to me because I wear a lot of color. I really wanted my DNA to be in the prints. I’ve always liked a fruit print, especially cherries. And then I obviously needed an homage to my little Bengal cat, Tarzan. So I did a leopard print with some palm leaves, and hid my initials in there.

Glamour: Is there a particular era you’re inspired by?

HVN: I’ve always gravitated towards 1940s dresses. It’s like a diamond in the rough when you can find them. They’re so flattering and forgiving, but they still feel easy and effortless.

Glamour: There’s a reason they never go out of style, right?

HVN: There is something to be said about these classic silhouettes that have worked throughout time on all women. The dresses look great on women with a chest, without a chest, petite, tall. As soon as I was able to share them, I called all my friends, and was like, ‘Come over and try them!’ My friends are all so different. And the dresses have translated to them in different ways.

Glamour: Let’s talk about versatility. How do you style them from day to night, work to weekend?

HVN: Upstate this weekend, I was wearing the pleated dress with flats and a little necktie scarf. The other night, I DJ’d a party, and wore the same style with a heel and a big earring. I think it’s all in the accessories and the makeup. Throw on a red lip and an earring and it becomes evening.

Glamour: You have a lot of inspiring, successful women around you, from your mother (who ran jewelry designer Tom Binns’ business) to your cousin Charlotte Dellal, who founded accessory brand Charlotte Olympia. How have they inspired you from a business standpoint?

HVN: All of those women are such an inspiration to me, and a lot of it comes from that idea of it’s OK to start out small and focused. Develop one thing that you feel passionately about and that you know well, and get that really right. It doesn’t mean you’re limited to only that forever.

Glamour: Very true. DVF started with a wrap prom dresses manchester, and now she has an empire.

HVN: Starting out small doesn’t mean you can’t dream big!
