A good visit to the beauty salon is not a mere hair appointment, but rather, it is a time of friendship, laughter, and rejuvenation.

Being the best stylist is about perfecting the craft and being a people person.

“Many of my clients come back because of my personality,” says Rachel Caruthers, owner of The Beauty Bar.

The Beauty Bar is located on 5550 Broadway, Suite 2 in Merrillville.

Caruthers, 32, was born and raised in Gary and Merrillville, and has been doing hair for 10 years.

Since The Beauty Bar opened in October 2016, she says she has grown in her skills and learned a lot about time management when working with multiple clients.

Her goal is to help stylists who are new to the industry become better, just as she was mentored as an apprentice in the cosmetology world.

Caruthers works in all kinds of styles.

“Wash and blow dry, style, sew-ins. I do it all," she said. She also provides make-up services.

Caruthers is currently looking for other stylists but needs to have the right fit.

“This is a calm environment. Its relaxing and comfortable for the clients, and I want to keep it that way.”

The color scheme is pink, black, white, and gold; feminine and modern. Also, the soft gospel music she plays creates a very welcoming and homey atmosphere.
