Often a steel alloy is available which is suitably moldable and the metal extends into a complex shape such as body panel, without tearing, wrinkling or otherwise tearing the sheet.

 

Progressive metal stamping and, for example, punching and shearing operations can be progressively carried out on a single sheet steel so that the panel with each step is completed within a few seconds. Aluminum plastic alloys would replace steel in many applications to save weight. For example, some aluminum alloys of the series 5xxx and 6xxx are used for sheet metal pressing.

 

Such aluminum die-casting alloys are not so malleable and moldable as steel alloys, and the aluminum sheet is often torn when it is embossed into the same shape. The aluminum alloy is cured at the speed of the metal pressing and some part of the sheet is torn off and torn. This property of aluminum alloys has limited the shapes of the products to which they can be formed by the high speed of metal pressing.
